“BAND-AID BANDIT” AND PARTNER FOUND GUILTY ON BANK ROBBERY AND FIREARMS CHARGES

Tampa, FL - A federal jury today found Rafael Angel Rondon, age 47, of Clermont, Florida, and Emerigildo Roman, age 54, of Davenport, Florida, guilty on six counts of bank robbery. In addition, Rondon was found guilty of six counts of carrying a firearm during the robberies and Roman was found guilty of five counts of carrying a firearm. The maximum penalty for the bank robbery charges is 25 years’ imprisonment and the maximum penalties for the firearms charges are seven years’ imprisonment for the first charge, followed by 25 years’ imprisonment for each additional firearms charge which must run consecutive to any other sentence imposed. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

The defendants were arrested on July 20, 2006, and charged in a criminal complaint with three bank robberies. They were indicted on August 10, 2006 for committing six bank robberies.

Testimony at the trial revealed the pair had put together a “bank robbery kit” that was stored in a cooler at Rondon’s home. Inside the “kit” detectives found wigs, mustaches, walkie talkies and more than $90,000 in cash.

Acting United States Attorney James R. Klindt stated, “I want to commend the Band-Aid Bandit Task Force that stopped this robbery rampage. Hopefully the tellers they terrorized will find some comfort knowing these bandits will likely spend the rest of their lives behind bars.”

This case was investigated by the Band-Aid Bandit Task Force established in May of 2003 and consists of the following agencies: the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the Ocala Police Department, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the Pinellas Park Police Department, the Tampa Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorneys Office, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Crime Stoppers of Alachua, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and West Central Florida and the Florida Banker’s Association.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Colleen Murphy Davis.
